Some consider the Nation’s Capital as “Fantasyland on the Potomac”. Other outsiders are “Fed Up” with the Federal City. It's better to consider D.C. as “the District of Calamity” (sic).
Today is the liturgical feast day for Pope Blessed John Paul II. It is worth remembering the encouraging words that the new pope uttered during his installation in 1978. The exhortation to "Open the doors wide to Christ" was delivered to a Church which was adjusting to the changes of Vatican II and a world in upheaval.
